Justice for Stephon Edward Watts, Recent Rally & Press Conference
When: Sat Feb 1, 2014 @ 2:00 Pm
Location: Cal-City Police Station, 1200 Pulaski Road, Calumet City, IL
On Saturday Feb 1st, family members, friends and community supporters, braving the frigid weather,
gathered for a rally and press conference for the 2nd Anniversary of the shooting death of Stephon
Watts. They were demanding justice for Stephon, an autistic 15 yr boy who brutally shot and killed in his home by Calumet City police officers, William Coffey and Robert Hynek.
Since February 1, 2012, when Stephon Edward Watts, was brutally shot and killed in his home by Calumet City police officers, William Coffey and Robert Hynek, the Powell-Watts Family and supporters have demanded justice for the beloved child’s murder. But, it’s become quite clear that both of the white police officers who shot and killed the 15 year old autistic African American child, have still not been charged, disciplined or held accountable for the cold blooded shooting death. Furthermore, the Powell-Watts Family and supporters are convinced that a fair and thorough investigation of the shooting was never conducted. Over the years, Calumet City police have established well-deserved reputation for using deadly force against people of color, with sanctioned impunity. We say, Enough is Enough!
The Justice For Stephon Watts campaign, with the support of family, friends, community members, UAW Local 551 Human & Civil Rights and Union Solidarity Committees and the Chicago Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression, demand that:
- Calumet City officers Robert Hynek and William Coffey be charged with the first degree murder of 15 year old autistic, Stephon Edward Watts!
- That the murder of Stephon Edward Watts be investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice, as the Calumet City police or the notorious Cook County Attorney General, Anita Alvarez, have proven incapable of conducting a fair, unbiased and thorough investigation of simular cases involving police misconduct and brutality.
- That Calumet City adopt the Stephon Edward Watts Law, which requires all first responders (police, firemen, emergency technicians, etc…) to be thoroughly trained in how to properly handle with people with disabilities.
PLEASE SUPPORT AND ADD YOUR VOICE TO THIS IMPORTANT CAUSE FOR THE LONG OVERDUE JUSTICE THAT THE POWELL- WATTS FAMILY DESERVES! THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN TO ANYONE’S CHILD, IF WE DON’T SPEAK UP NOW!
